The central paradox of the stories I report is that there are strategies you can learn and models you can follow, but every situation is so different that you really can’t follow models blindly. Think of this as trying to understand the broad principles to apply fluidly to your company’s specific situation. As a writer, I have to understand enough of those specific details to understand the story, but I then must be able to talk about how to generalize these so they apply to a reader’s specific company situation.

Good plan. So, I took a class in managerial accounting. I did not know a debit from a credit (still don’t) and felt it was time to learn this. It turns out that this course was, in fact, about strategic decision making. A. program—sunk costs and opportunity costs. I actually liked business school! A. program for the ensuing 21⁄2 years. I was doing good, but not earth-shattering, research at Du Pont while finding I enjoyed learning about strategic planning. A. students. I chose to write about the impact of biotechnology on the pharmaceutical industry.
