Two of these receptors interpret the dopamine as an ‘‘on’’ messenger; they signal their nerve cell to send messages to the next nerve cells in the network. The other three respond to the dopamine with the opposite result: they send a signal encouraging their nerve cell to remain inactive. In either case, however, the dopamine molecules hook onto the receptors for only a brief moment before the receptors, in a ﬂash, hurl them back into the ﬂuid that bathes the brain.
