The English watercolourists are famed for their sensitive, delicate colours that owe more to the weather conditions than artistic temperament. The melancholy mood that pervades their landscapes and seascapes reflects the influence of the climate. The misty atmosphere and diffused light reduces contrast so that the tonal range is narrower than where strong darks and lights prevail. You can still use pure colours in a low-key painting if they are very diluted so that the white of the paper is allowed to shine through or mix them to make neutrals.

So a painting with red and blue, which would stress the contrasting properties of those colours, could be unified by adding the intermediary red-violets and blue-violets to make a clever colour link. The complementaries (see here) are completely unlike each other, so they create a very strong contrast and tend to intensify each other. If the complementaries are the same saturation, or strength of colour, they can produce a vivid optical impact. Harmonious colours To paint in harmonious colour is to work with the range of colours that are adjacent to each other on the colour wheel – for example the range from dark orange through red to violet, from light green through yellow to orange, or from cool blues to deep greens.

While this may seem tricky, it means you will be using a limited palette, which pulls a painting together. LOT VALLEY, FRANCE The winding river helps this painting to achieve a sense of depth, while the rooftop tiles in the foreground provide contrasting detail. TUSCAN HILLS The defined line of olive trees – painted in a Naples Yellow and Prussian Blue mix – lead into a vast landscape of low hills, which were painted on very wet paper to suggest distance. Still life A still life can be anything from a bowl of beautiful fruit in harmonious colours to the contents of a handbag scattered in an interesting fashion.
